The appointment of Yanitary Commissioner is not likely to be required so the salary of the post will not be drawn on. This would save over $9,000; but against this must be set the probable continuance of the Chief Clerk to the Medical Officer of Health
($1,800). In any case the appointment would not be persionable.
The special plague staff is inserted, at a cost of $202,000 odd (reduced from the estimate in 29943 by cutting down the disinfectants by $40,000). We autho- rised this being provided for consideration: and now I think we might approve. I don't know whether he wants the two Assistant Medical Officers engaged here; and I think we had better enquire by telegraph. The chief other increase is $26,900 in the scavenging contract; this is explained in 45658.

There is a vote of $12,000 for the maintenance of quarters at the Peak Hospital for Nurses see 45184/01. I think we might pass it; it will not recur. The vote for Interest has doubled - now $5,000. This is "chiefly due to the augmentation of the Widows and Orphans Fund".
